Priyanka and Minissha to compete
Its clash time again for the two beauties. On one side is the dusky Priyanka Chopra who is back to avenge the destiny's decision to hand over the title of flop to her last big budget futuristic flick and regain her lost ground with 'Drona'. On the other side stand the cute, talented and the latest bikini girl of B-Town Minissha Lamba. The girl who is considered to be good enough because of her potential to be included in the top league of B-Town beauties in the future and who is on a high after the success of 'Bachana Aaye Hasino'. It was on August 15 that 'God Tussi Great Ho' having Priyanka as the leading lady and 'Bachana Aaye Hasino' having Minissha as one of the heroines hit the big screens. While the film of Salman Khan sank without a trace, 'BAH' went up the popularity charts. Now the time has come again for two films of Priyanka and Minissha to face each other as 'Drona' and 'Kidnap' will be releasing this Friday. This time it is impossible to side with either of the two movies as each has its own strong points and is totally different from each other except the common factor of some edge of the seat action sequences.Let's wait and watch the verdict of the decisive Friday.

Actress Aparna pairs up with Aamir Khan
Can you just imagine who this actress Aparna is? Well, for many this would be a strange thing for they wouldn't have seen or heard about such an actress. Fine! she made her debut by financing for the film Pudhukottayil Irundhu Saravanan. That film fetched the worst credits for Dhanush and became a great spoiler in his career. However, in order to prove that even she is an actress, Aparna continued to act in small role in Saravan Subbaiah's ABCD starring Shaam in lead role. Well, the fate of Dhanush was the same for Shaam. When director of Payanigalin Gavanathirku approached her with the script, she wanted to pair up with Aarya. But Arya was determined not to face the same destiny. Now, sources close to her have revealed that she is seeking for offers in Bollywood and especially with Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan is ready with his second project as a producer for the flim Janaena Tuje… that has Genelia and Aamir Khan's nephew in lead roles. Aparna wanted to push away Genelia from this project and get her replaced. This really sounds funny for an actress who isn't able to make good performance in Kollywood is seeking for Bollywood. Aparna can consider this as a funny dream…

Movie Review: Billa

Movie Review: Billa
Banner : Ananda Pictures
Rating: 3.75/5
Cast : Ajith, Nayantara, Namitha, Prabhu Ganesan, Rahman, Rose Dawn
Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja
Cinematography: Nirav Shah
Editing : Sreekar Prasad
Producer: L Suresh
Director: Vishnu Vardhan
Release Date: December 07, 2007
Story
Vishnu Vardhan has come up with a no-nonsense fast moving action flick which stands a class apart from the regular remakes. The movie revolves around the dreaded and most wanted gangster Billa (Ajith) and he is tracked by none other than the top cop Jai (Prabhu). The cop manages to get Billa on the hold but then accidentally kills him due to inevitable circumstances. Now , in order to know the whole roots of the gang he has to look for another alternative and in comes Velu (Ajith) , a small time thief but a Billa look alike who becomes the solution for Jai. Velu is then trained and infiltrated into Billa's gang as Billa himself. On the other hand, there is Sasha (Nayantara)who is out to seek revenge of her brother's death by killing Billa and then the beautiful CJ (Namitha) who is the girl friend of Billa and last but not the least the big boss (Raghuman). Story takes a turn when Jai gets killed and Velu is stuck with no way out. How Velu handles things and what happens to the gang forms the rest of the story.
Presentation
Vishnu Vardhan has done an impressive job for two reasons. Firstly, he is making a remake of the biggest superstar in the industry who still rules and secondly, the story is a known dish to the audience and the challenge is to keep them captivated. Vishnu has made his point very clear in his presentation and narration and without doubt showed his film by not challenging the original. The icing on the cake is some excellent cinematography (Nirav Shah) aided with some beautiful costume design (Anu Vardhan). Yuvan Shankar Raja needs no introduction as his background score was excellent and so are his numbers. Ajith has been a revelation in this one and has performed well as Billa without trying to ape Rajni however the character of Velu was a bit ignored as it seems that Vishnu was keen on projecting Billa. Nayan makes a sizzling presence felt and her introduction is a treat. Namitha has done justice to her role with some glitzy outfits and both the heroines have provided sufficient visual feast for the audience. Prabhu and Raghuman carried out their roles with ease.
Conclusion
A stylishly made film with some sophistication and some skilled action sequences. More than the content, the movie can be given credit for its technical values and some good stellar performances by the cast. The movie is fast paced and does not leave the audience bored, however there are a few gaps like Nayan's character could have been much better, there are a few open ended questions though not very provoking.

Akshay's great line up in 2008

Producers are bullish on Akshay as there is a guaranteed return on investment. His new price of 22 crore is considered to be justified too as he has got huge and formidable releases in the future, starting with Yashraj's TASHAN.
Others to follow in 2008 would be Warner brothers biggest action film CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (erstwhile titled MADE IN CHINA), Sajid Nadiadwala's KAMBAKTH ISHQ, Vipul Shah's SINGH IS KINGG and Nagesh Kukunoor's EIGHT by TEN.
Last year, even when released on the same day, Akshay's collections of 'Bhool Bhulaiya' were bigger than those of Yashraj's 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag' overseas as well as in the domestic market. Within five days of its release, the film was number seven on the UK charts. 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa', a comic-thriller directed by Priyadarshan, registered collections of over 200,000 pounds in the first three days
In US also, the film came as a big surprise because Yash Raj films are known as big brands in the overseas market.

Glamour with purpose: Nayantara’s logic

Post ‘Billa’, many fans have started equating Nayantara with Namitha. The reporters meeting Nayantara nowadays are asking about her sexy appearance in ‘Billa’.
She is repeatedly responding them saying that the film required such costumes. She accepted to wear such outfits since they were relevant to the film and her character, she adds.
“How can you conclude that I would do the same thing in all the films I act in future?” queries the glam girl.
However, Lakshmi, a Telugu film, which is ready to be released in Tamil Nadu soon, is said to have Nayantara and Charmi sporting daringly glamorous looks. The film was super hit in Telugu and Malayalam. It also made super collection in Bengal and Oriya. The dubbed version in Tamil will be released soon.
Nayantara’s appearance in ‘Lakshmi’ is said to be more glamorous than ‘Billa’. Will the beauty queen have a fitting reply for that as well?

flash dis appoints
It’s all about delusion, manic depression, phobias and falsification of memories. Moreover the hero is a multifaceted genius, a psychiatrist doctor turned software specialist, who will leave all his preoccupations whenever he gets a necessary pathetic mental state to study. And the latest in his patient list is his favorite friend and staff's young fiancĂ©e. The Psychiatrist is ready to go to any extent to heal her, he even devices out-of-the-world possible to get her back intact............Any clues? No , we are not on to discuss anything about the decade old classic 'Manichithrathaazhu'...But we are just reminding the flashes of storyline that you will face onscreen, when you get to enjoy the new offering for Christmas,’ Flash'. Sadly to say, this new film which marks the return of celebrated director Sibi alayil after a couple of years, is a sad letdown affair, penned around the classic Fazil film, which resembles the original not even in parts but also in many sequences.
The film opens with the introduction of bold and beautiful, Dhwany Sekharan, a hyperactive engineering student and daughter of Chennai based construction business man Shekharan Nair, who is left in their ancient kalarithody tharavadu with her grandfather, after the early death of her mother. Shekharan, on the other hand had a lot of resistance in his family itself in the form of his younger brother Bhadran and his cousin Arun, who don’t want him to head any of the initiatives of the wealthy Karlarythody group of companies. Dhwany, who share a special relation with her grandfather, gets all support on her endeavors from him, whether it is the issue of teasing her uncle Viswanathan Nair or in the issue of the secret relation between the home driver and her cousin Veena, which was brought to public by her. It was at this point, Dhwany started showing some kind of anomalies in her behavior. And immediately her Uncle's son Priyan, with whom Dhwany’s marriage has been talked off, takes note of this and entrusts his guide and employer Midhun Madhavan to treat her.
The scriptwriter showers all kind of credentials to Midhun Madhavan, (whose name is rarely heard in the film, as the dialogue writer forget to call him by name ). Besides being an astute member of I M A, he was even the camp director of Scotland yard's session on criminal psychiatry in India. He was also the ambassador of international charity league apart from being the C E O of the multicrore software firm Infinity Visual magic, where Priyan works. Priyan tries to bring Dhwany to the firm as an employee, but the idea backfires as she finds the pretense drama before her interview, too silly. After a number of clashes, Midhun somehow manages to get into the tharavaadu as a family friend and establishes good relation with her grandfather, who runs a Kalary even at the age of seventy. Dhwany, who never gets a hint about her illness, instantly falls for Midhun. Around this time some kind of man missing is reported from the tharavadu .And shortly afterwards Dhwany’s father is also found murdered. Local C I Jacob Chandy, starts investigating on every related cases and every clues points to Dhwany, as being the part of each murders. Now Midhun is left in a critical situation in which he has to save his patient from the arms of the police and further mental breakdowns. How he manages to do so forms the rest of the story told is a rather unappealing way.
The plot, even though half baked, is little appealing but it is the screenplay and the dialogues that proved to be the biggest negatives of the film. The director, Sibi Malayil and the scriptwriter s Bhasurachandran has miserably failed to make the film an engrossing affair, as the first half with cliched sequences is a little dragging with none of the sequences inviting our interest. Instead of shooting in different unexplored locations and dressing up your lead stars in the best of costumes, the makers could have looked for a better contrived plot. The film's graph climbs up only after Siddhique, as the circle inspector, makes his appearance in its later half and there after the film takes the plight of an investigative thriller than the intended psychological thriller.
Mohanlal looks good, but doesn;t have anything special to do than to repeat the 'Manichithrathaazhu' act. Parvathy as Dhwany couldn't burnish the loads of expressions that were associated with a character suffering from such a trauma. She neither shows any onscreen chemistry with Mohanlal , even though the screenplay don’t demands it much. This was her missed chance; in a role of a lifetime .The actress gives a dilettante feel, in many sequences which could have worked out, if she was able to give better emoting performances. Suraaj, Jagathy and co tries hard to bring out some chuckles in many a scenes, but with little success.
The musician Gopi Sundar too couldn't bring up any great themes or tunes that could carry the film with it. Sajan Kalathil with his beautiful frames tries to revive the interest on the film, but good framing is not the only thing that makes good movies.
Sibi Malayil , the director who had delivered many classics in could have looked upon for a better script for his relaunch, than this which is found to be wanting in many areas. If he is to go on repeating things like this, very soon he will be stamped as a director who can't go over the potential of the supplied scripts. And if the final question is whether this movie is worth your time and money; the answer may be........ We defy answering, as we love this director of calibre, much more than this film.
College kumaranMohanlal has started work on his new film College Kumaran, directed by Thulasidas in Thiruvananthapuram. The film was talked about in the industry even before the shoot started as Mohanlal is rumoured to be getting his highest ever salary (Rs 1.25 crore!) for it.Mohanlal is playing a college canteen supervisor, whose gang consists of young college students, who adore him. For any function or study tour Kumaraettan (Mohanlal) is a must. Kumaraettan is the life and soul of the college.
Vimala Raman is being cast opposite Mohanlal for the first time. She plays Madhavi, the History lecturer at the college, who thinks Kumaraettan is spoiling the students. Madhavi`s pathological hatred for Kumaraettan turns into love soon.
College Kumaran is slated to be Mohanlal`s Ramzan release. Vimala will have a matured look in the film in which she will be wearing only sari and designer blouses.(only that??)
Balachandra Menon plays an important role in the film, which has also Siddique, Salim Kumar, Sai Kumar, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Shamana, Lakshmi Krishnamurthy. Story and screenplay is by Suresh Poduval, while music is by Ouseappachan.
