Luck by chance Review

Monday, February 2, 2009

If you want to know how Luck By Chance is in one line, it is slow and shallow. If you want to read
more

about Luck by chance:

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar

Cinematographer: Carlos Catalan

Editor: Anand Subaya

Art Director: Anuradha Parikh, T P Abid

Screenplay Writer: Javed Akhtar

Story: Zoya Akhtar

Story of Luck By Chance: Vikram Jaisingh(Farhan Akhtar) is a Bollywood aspirant who dreams of making it big. He lives with a couple of friends in Mumbai, one of them a TV actor. Sona(Konkana Sen Sharma) is working with a small time producer Chaudhry(Aly Khan)who promises her a plum role, some day in exchange of sexual favors. Sona and Vikram meet by chance, and fall in love. In another part of the glitzy world, a successful producer Romy Rolly who is launching a film starring Zafar Khan(Hrithik Roshan) and debutante star-daughter Niki(Isha Sherwani) , gets a set-back when Zafar abandons the film to work for Karan Johar. Niki’s mother Neena(Dimple Kapadia) who once a huge star, wants her daughter to work with Zafar Khan for her first film. But with Zafar Khan leaving, the producer Romy is left in a lurch.

Sona feels betrayed and distraught when the producer Chaudhry says that there is no role for her. She however leaves a photo of Vikram for him to peruse. The picture lands up at Romy’s office and his wife (played by Juhi Chawla) feels Vikram is apt for the role. A screen test later, Vikram Jaisingh is signed for the lead role. As the popularity of Vikram increases, he began to distance himself from his friends and his girlfriend. He also starts to fancy his heroine Niki who gives in to his advances. The grapevine and the media takes full advantage of this situation and creates controversy about how Vikram has used mother and daughter(Neena and Niki) to further his ambitions and how he has hidden the truth about his girlfriend. The bad news works in Vikram’s favor and his first film with Niki begins a hit. Sona who has parted ways with Vikram, starts to work in serials trying to establish her own identity.

Plus points of Luck By Chance:
The beginning. A couple of scenes where Farhan is shown practicing in the acting class, show that the movie could have great momentum. Sadly, it doesn’t. The performances save the day again in this boring film, especially the performances of Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Konkana Sen Sharma and Farhan Akhtar(in that order)

Minus points:
Luck By Chance is not honest to its title. The movie is less about the ‘struggle’ and more about two timing. The protagonist gets to the top without much of an effort and you hardly get to see the fighting spirit or endurance of the protagonist, which would have been inspiring to say the least. As for the plot, it moves at a snail’s place. The first half is very slow and the second half is cliché. The screenplay is not up to the mark and you feel in the first half that the movie is going round and round, without heading anywhere.

There are many scenes which were not required and there are many sequences which could have led to great entertainment, had they been shown. For instance, the scene where Niki comes to meet Vikramsingh secretly, has a lot of promise but fizzles away. Also there are a lot of hypocritical elements and clichés in Bollywood, which could have been shown. A lot of on-set shooting sequences could have been shown.

A bucketful of guest appearances thrown in for effect, are not even worth talking about. You will miss Kareena Kapoor if you excuse yourself for a sneeze. Only Shahrukh Khan with an impactful one-scene and Anurag Kashyap as the writer who writes films watching foreign DVDS, make an impact. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is disappointing. The movie demanded high quality music and a moving/inspiring sound-track, which is missing. The chemistry between Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma is missing, the director skips talking about how the relationship developed. In one scene, there are talking formally and in the next scene, they are hugging and kissing.

Take notice Hrithik Roshan takes a dig at Shahrukh Khan in Luck By Chance, in a dialogue wherein he says that he is just an employee who works for Zafar Khan, the star. This is a line which SRK usually uses in his interview.

Best scenes of Luck By Chance:
1. A smart scene where Farhan Akhtar walks up to Dimple Kapadia at a party and floors her by flattering her to the skies.
2. Aly Khan telling Konkana Sen Sharma point blank that she cannot be cast in the movie he is planning for, and the subsequent break-down and regaining of composure done brilliantly by Konkona Sen Sharma.

Performances of Luck By Chance:
Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia stand out in terms of performance. Isha Sherwani does a neat job. Konkana as usual, gives in a measured performance. Farhan Akhtar underplays his role and gives a subtle touch to his role. Hrithik Roshan does not elicit the ‘wow’ appeal he is known for, and does an understated job, even though he is the ‘star’ in the film.

Conclusion: A movie like Halla Bol showed the story of a struggler in a better manner. Luck By Chance does not inspire, does not really go beyond the cliché and does not portray Bollywood in its naked truth. It plays safe and saccharine; we would have loved it, if there was spice in it.

Shah Rukh and Aamir coming together for director Danny Boyle

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Our headlines may mislead our patrons into thinking that two of Bollywood ’s biggest superstars, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, are coming together for a film to be directed by the SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE director, Danny Boyle. But sadly, that is just wishful thinking. However, there is one very important factor that binds the three and that is none other than the famous stunt coordinator and action director, Sham Kaushal.

For those who are unaware, Sham Kaushal has been in the news for composing the stunts and action sequences of last week’s release, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Moreover, he is also the action/stunt coordinator of Karan Johar’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN and Rajkumar Hirani’s Aamir Khan starrer, 3 IDIOTS. He has an impressive list of releases coming up this year in the form of Vishal Bhardwaj’s KAMINAY, Nagesh Kukunoor’s TASVEER and Prakash Jha’s RAJNEETI, apart from the three prestigious films mentioned above.
Well, Bollywood may have woken up late to the talent of Sham Kaushal, but King Khan spotted it very early on and gave Sham a break in his home productions, ASOKA (2001). Later he stunned the film industry by composing some amazing stunts and action sequences for Hrithik Roshan’s KRISSH. Sham then went on to do OM SHANTI OM for SRK’s home banner, Red Chillies and he is now coordinating the action sequences of two of the most anticipated releases of 2009, MY NAME IS KHAN and 3 IDIOTS.

Hrithik roshan injured

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Bollywood hunk Hrithik Roshan met with an accident while shooting a stunt scene for his home production Kites at Filmistan studio. He was supposed to break a glass and while doing so some pieces of glass pierced his wrist. He was immediately taken to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Centre in suburban Andheri. After undergoing some treatment, he was discharged.

"Hrithik hurt his arm while doing a stunt shot for 'Kites' at the Filmistan studio. He was breaking a glass with a rod and one piece of glass flew and hurt him. It's a minor injury - there's nothing major," said a source close to Hrithik.

This is not the first time Hrithik hurt himself during the shooting of Kites. While shooting in Las Vegas, he injured his knee as he performed some dangerous stunts. He even injured himself during Krrish and Dhoom 2. He underwent treatment in Singapore as well as a surgery in the United States. For his injury, he had to keep his shooting on halt for few weeks.

"Hrithik Roshan got hurt while shooting and we brought him to the hospital. He has got stitches in his hand but will be out soon," said Anurag Basu, Director.

Kites is one of the much awaited flicks of 2009 starring Hrithik, Barbara Mori and Kangana in the pivotal role.

Hrithik Roshan

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Hrithik Roshan, born on January 10, 1974, is a top rung bollywood actor and son of director Rakesh Roshan. Hrithik Roshan is fondly called 'Duggu' by those close to him. As a child artist Hrithik Roshan worked in 'Asha', 'Bhagwan Dada' and 'Aap ke Deewane'. He also worked as an assistant director on 'Khudgarz', 'Karan Arjun' and 'Koyla', 'Karobar' and 'King Uncle'. Hrithik Roshan made his debut as a leading man in Bollywood with 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai', a movie produced and directed by father Rakesh Roshan. The movie was a huge success and turned Hrithik Roshan into a superstar literally overnight.

The movie's success was followed by an attack on Rakesh Roshan by the Mumbai underworld, after he ignored their extortion threats. Rakesh Roshan survived the attack.

Hrithiks debut was so sensational, he was being seen as the man taking over from Shahrukh Khan, arguably the most successful actor in bollywood. Shahrukh Khan at that point of time became so insecure reportedly that he agreed to do a Pepsi commercial that made a dig at Hrithik Roshan who endorsed Coke then. This led to a lot of bad press for Shahrukh Khan. Eventually things were sorted out and the two even worked together in Karan Johar's 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' where Hrithik played younger brother to Shahrukh Khan.

Hrithik Roshan married Suzzane Khan soon after his debut amidst strong rumors of his liason with Kareena Kapoor. Hrithik's wife Suzzane Khan is the daughter of yesteryear's actor-director Sanjay Khan and sister of actor Zayed Khan. Hrithik now has a son from Suzzane Khan, named 'Rehaan'.

Meanwhile Hrithik's debut movie was followed by a string of flops including 'Fiza', 'Mission Kashmir', 'Yaadein', 'Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage ', 'Na Tum Jaano Na Hum', 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge!' and 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon ' with the 2001 release 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' being the only success in this period. Critics almost wrote him off calling him a 'one film wonder' and a 'flash in the pan' until he bounced back with 'Koi Mil Gaya' again directed by his father, Rakesh Roshan.

Hrithik Roshan played a mentally retarted boy who becomes unusually strong and powerful with the influence of an extra terrestrial visitor from space. The movie also brought him critical aclaim apart from bringing him back in favor with the masses. In early 2006 Hrithik Roshan starred in Krissh, a sequel to 'Koi Mil Gaya', the third movie produced and directed by his father for him that collected over 70 crore rupees (About $15 million) at the box office.

Over the last five years, his three home productions have been his most successful films and some believe that Hrithik is only successful with his father behind the camera. Sources close to the Roshan family tell us that Hrithik Roshan has immense talent for filmmaking and his contribution to these movies have been behind the camera too. Hrithik is known to be very passionate about his work and gets involved in every aspect of a movie, especially if it is his own home production. Rakesh Roshan has publicly acknowledged Hrithik's role in keeping him in touch with contemporary world cinema. Hrithik has assisted Rakesh Roshan on his home productions including 'King Uncle' and Karan Arjun'.

Hrithik Roshan is a favorite pin up boy of millions. Few knew that before his debut Hrithik tried hard to have a sculpted body without much success. Finally a dejected Duggu approached superstar Salman Khan, having known him from the days of 'Karan Arjun' and received tips from him. This led to his beefy look in 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' that clicked with the masses.

Rakesh Roshan had spent a lot of money on his son's debut movie, trying to showcase every talent of his. It turned out to be a very expensive movie and despite efforts distributors were wary of buying the rights to it. Eventually Rakesh Roshan released it himself in a few territories and reaped a bounty as it succeeded in a big way at the box-office.

Industry sources say Hrithik Roshan has been strongly influenced by the family of his in-laws and is no longer the soft spoken down to earth boy he was when he started out. This was apparent when allegations of plagiarism surfaced against Rakesh Roshan for 'Krissh' and Hrithik was quoted as saying, "If there's anybody else out there claiming a piece of dad's original work, please come forward. I have a lot of muscle I need to put to come good use".

Hrithik Roshan is known to be very choosy about the movies he works in and few scripts are written keeping him in mind. He starred in 'Dhoom 2' one of the biggest box-office grossers of 2006 in which he played a villain role for the first time. He's also part of 'Jodha-Akbar' directed by Ashutosh Gowariker where he's paired opposite Aishwarya Rai.

Hrithik has a vestigial thumb on his right hand and is 6 feet tall. His wife, Suzzane Khan has said on record that he's obsessed with his looks and is often found staring at himself in the mirror.
